As Christians, we have an incredible inheritance through our redemption in Christ Jesus. The Bible tells us in Romans 8:17 that we are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ. But what does this truly mean for our lives?

Being an heir of God means that Christ’s death on the cross transferred to us the legal rights to all the blessings of redemption. Just as an heir inherits property, rank, title and position from someone who has died, we inherit Christ’s authority, privilege and blessings through his death and resurrection. We have the right to His rank – the Bible says we are seated with Him in heavenly places, above all principalities and powers (Ephesians 2:6, Colossians 2:10). We have the right to His title as sons of God (John 1:12). And we have the right to His position of authority and dominion.

This means the supernatural should be natural for us as believers. Jesus said those born of the Spirit would move in inexplicable ways, like the wind (John 3:8). People marveled at Jesus, wondering what kind of man He was. The same should be said of us. Our lives should display God’s power in such a way that others wonder at it, even if they can’t explain it. We are meant to be signs and wonders (Isaiah 8:18).

Part of our inheritance in Christ is dominion over death. Hebrews 2:14-15 tells us that through His death, Jesus destroyed the one who had the power of death – the devil – and freed us from the fear of death that kept us in bondage. Now Jesus holds the keys of death and Hades (Revelation 1:18). When we choose life, as God instructed in Deuteronomy 30:19, we exercise the dominion over death that Christ purchased for us.

How do we walk in this supernatural inheritance and dominion? Through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the “Grand Commander” of the supernatural, the Spirit of wonders. We see this throughout the Book of Acts – when the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, they moved in incredible signs and wonders. But it wasn’t a one-time filling – they needed continual fillings, equippings and growth in the Spirit.

The same is true for us today. We need the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit working through us to do the “greater works” Jesus said we would do (John 14:12). And we cultivate that anointing by diligently seeking God through prayer, fasting, studying His Word, and frequent fellowship with other believers. The level of the supernatural we walk in is determined by our level of anointing.

Why do we need this supernatural power? To do exploits for God’s Kingdom and to overcome evil. Psalm 110 depicts Christ’s enemies being made His footstool, and us ruling in the midst of our enemies. We don’t have to be ruled by evil – we can rule over it, but only through the power of the Holy Spirit.

As heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, the supernatural inheritance is ours – an inheritance of authority, dominion, power and exploits. May we passionately pursue a greater anointing and filling of the Holy Spirit, so that the world will marvel at the God who works wonders through us. He has made us more than conquerors and overcomers in this life. Let’s walk in the fullness of our supernatural inheritance in Christ!
